My favourite family holidays are based in game reserves. At a time when I was feeling particularly homesick, my friends and I took a trip to Addo Elephant Park. Ten minutes into our drive, two male lions crossed the road in front of us, oblivious to our hushed excitement. Our sightings continued to amaze as we trawled the park; we saw some enormous elephants and a couple of very tame zebras. The day is etched in my memory with great fondness. My nostalgia for game drives was remedied, and happiness was found.

The two lions, one younger than the other, took a leisurely stroll past our car.

A herd of elephants gathered at a muddy spot in the riverbed.

One of the stragglers of the herd rushes to catch up to their family.

This zebra seemed to enjoy the attention of the camera.

The herd groups around the smaller members, protecting them from prying eyes.

A solo balancing act.
