On 26 November 2025, our Turtle Conservation Centre team released turtles Nori, Stella, Pebbles, and Cinnamon into the De Hoop Marine Protected Area (MPA)!

The Two Oceans Aquarium is known for its incredible marine life. Perhaps the most awe-inspiring of our exhibits are the Save Our Seas Foundation Shark, Kelp Forest, and I&J Ocean Exhibits. Over 30 years, these stunning exhibits have inspired local and international visitors to take a deeper look at the world beneath the surface.

Shark nets are just what they sound like: Sprawling underwater barriers designed to remove sharks from public beaches. Unsurprisingly, there is a price for bather protection, and sharks have been paying it for decades.

Nobomvu, the beloved loggerhead turtle often referred to as our “Red Lady”, has sent in her final satellite tracking update. After 659 days covering an incredible 25 500km, Nobomvu’s satellite tag has stopped transmitting. This marks the end of the Turtle Conservation Centre’s four-year journey with her. Over her tracking period, she travelled close to 40km every single day!

In October 2025, the green turtle’s (Chelonia mydas) global conservation status was changed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Red List from Endangered to Least Concern. This is a significant success for one of the ocean’s most iconic species, and it is a result of decades of tireless conservation work around the world.

Many of our turtle community are familiar with the story of Kai, the loggerhead turtle. As a well-known and loved turtle ambassador, Kai has been undergoing rehabilitation with the Turtle Conservation Centre for a few years. Most recently, Kai’s recovery has had some exciting developments.

South Africa’s west coast is home to one of the most incredible kelp forest systems in the world: The Great African Seaforest. While roughly 25% of our blue planet is covered with kelp forests, many of these have experienced drastic declines over recent years as the ocean warms. Our Great African Seaforest is one of the few that have not wilted in the face of climate change – with this in mind, is it not crucial that its stewards appreciate its value and know how best to cons

Recently, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation hosted Seal Health Week for marine conservationists, veterinarians, researchers, and government partners to confront pressing challenges facing seal populations along the Southern African coastline.

Over the years, our Turtle Conservation Centre has rehabilitated hundreds of endangered turtles, each with a unique story.
